Fashionably Late: 5 Classic 2000′s Alt-Rock Songs You Should Listen To Again

After I had a bunch of older alt-rock songs stuck in my head today, I’ve decided to post some of them for you guys.

The Killers – When You Were Young

The Killers are a band often passed off as “too commercial” for good taste,  but if you take the time to review their catalogue of albums you will be hard-pressed to find a reason to dislike these guys. These guys are machines at pumping out pop hits with musical substance behind them. “When You Were Young” is a great example of this. Give the radio edit a listen, and I dare you to not have the melody stuck in your head for at least a day.

Bloc Party – She’s Hearing Voices

A band that I consistently forget to give proper listening time is Bloc Party. “Silent Alarm” might be one of my favorite albums of the 2000′s, and the track that stood out to me was “She’s Hearing Voices”. Progressively building into a vocal melody over smashing guitars and violent drums, the track is a great example of the greatness of that decade in alternative rock music.

LCD Soundsystem – New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down

I had the pleasure of seeing LCD Soundsystem perform at Bonnaroo in 2010, and it is one of the shows I will never forget. From 2AM until what felt like sunrise, James Murphy and his gang blasted tune after tune to a packed house. This track is one of my favorites because of the way it progressively builds into power chords and smashing drums, then slips back into a melodic piano loop and vocal harmony. This is a band I would truly pay good money to see again live.

Modest Mouse – Dark Center Of The Universe

A lot of people know Modest Mouse for their hits: “Float On”, “Ocean Breathes Salty”, and “Fire It Up”; but these guys have a whole discography of music worthy of a listen. My personal favorite track of theirs is “Dark Center Of The Universe” from the album “The Moon and Antarctica”. Running at about 5 minutes, this song follows a similar pattern to the rest in this post, using a melodic build up crescendoing into a smashing guitar loop hook. If you have only heard Modest Mouse’s pop hits, give this a listen to open your mind to their talent.

Jet – Are You Gonna Be My Girl

Rounding out the list, I have a song that you can’t deny you have bobbed your head to. Jet might have came and gone quickly, but they made a massive impact with this song. This track epitomizes American alt-pop-rock in the early 2000′s.

“You look so fine and I really wanna make you mine.”
